A range of penalties on conviction exist for Food Safety offences, with the majority in the band of up to £5,000.

There are however some where the maximum fine is £20,000 at the magistrates court or carry the possibility of a prison sentence. Unlimited fines can be imposed if the matter goes to the Crown Court or for some offences there are powers for unlimited fines at magistrates courts as well.

In addition to a financial penalties, courts have an option to prevent an individual from running a food business.
